She has a journey of hundreds of miles ahead of her, but she is loyal, optimistic, and determined to get home to Lucas. In a journey that comes to span several years, Bella meets, protects, and befriends a baby cougar, who in turn later protects and cares for Bella. Bella meets countless people, most of whom are friendly toward her and feed her. She meets a fellow dog named Dutch, and helps Dutch to rescue his owner from an avalanche even though Dutch’s owner is not a good person, and ends up choosing not to keep Dutch.
Big Kitten wants Bella to stay with her, but Bella still wants to find Lucas. The two nuzzle up one last time as a goodbye, and Bella runs into town. She finds that she has to cross traffic, and as she runs into the street, she causes a major incident. People get out of their cars to help Bella, but they only frighten her. Bella gets out of the house to chase a squirrel, and Lucas manages to find her on the streets. Unfortunately, so does Chuck, and he has two officers to back him up.

After encountering further challenges, Bella finally makes it back to Denver, and she bids Big Kitten farewell before they part ways. A little dog is left alone under the ruins of an old home as an animal control officer takes her siblings and mother away. She is raised by a cat until she is found by a teen named Lucas and his friend Olivia. She becomes a big part of his life, as well as Lucas's mother Terri, and the veterans at a therapy center who all feel happy when Bella is around. However, the animal control officer, Chuck, wants Bella since she is a pitbull and pitbulls are illegal in Denver. She reaches the city's VA hospital, where she joyfully reunites with Lucas, Terri, and Olivia.

Shortly after winter, Bella begins to chew on the rope, an effort ultimately futile when an increasingly desperate Axel replaces the rope with a chain. The homeless eventually died, leaving Bella unable to eat or drink because of Axel's heavy body hanging on the chain. Bella is fortunately rescued by two kids who pull the chain from her neck before she dies of thirst.

The landlord leaves a notice on Lucas and Terri’s door to inform them that he is coming by the next day to check on the faucet, but they know they can’t leave Bella home alone. They take her to work at a center for veterans suffering from PTSD, including Terri. Lucas hides Bella in the closet and tells her not to bark, but she does so anyway, which leads Lucas and Olivia to go take care of her.

Over the next couple of years, Bella grows attached to Lucas, doing what she thinks are games like “Don’t Chew Shoes”, “Squirrel Hunting” or “Do You Want a Tiiiiiiiny Piece of Cheese? ” She is most fond of Lucas’s blanket and is also fond of Terri and Olivia.

The next day, when Bella gets out to chase a squirrel, Lucas catches up to her and prepares to take her home, but Chuck confiscates Bella and takes her into the local animal shelter. Lucas picks Bella up, pays a fine, and is allowed to take her home, but he is warned that if Bella is captured again, she will be euthanized. To avoid this, Lucas sends Bella to live with Olivia's aunt and uncle in Farmington, New Mexico, until he and his mother can find another home outside of Denver's urban limits. However, Bella misses Lucas so much that she leaves Farmington and begins a 400-mile journey home, which will take more than two years to complete.
